UPDATE:
10/19/2009
Dear Friend,
Amazon is feeling the pressure.
On Friday night we told you that
Amazon and other stores were selling "illegal alien" costumes.
You acted. Over the weekend you and more than 6,000
others wrote to Amazon, Toys R Us, Target and Walgreens
and told these companies that the costumes their corporations
are selling were offensive and dehumanizing and you asked them
to pull these items immediately off their internet site.
Some of these stores responded. By Saturday morning
Target and Toys R Us no longer has the items on their
sites. By Sunday morning Walgreens had the item listed as
out of stock with no reorder date.
Amazon.com, however, continues to
sell these extremely offensive "illegal alien" costumes, even after they were
pulled by other major retailers.
We need your help to keep the pressure on and let
Amazon know that this is simply unacceptable.
You've already signed our petition, but there are a few
simple ways you can help us keep the pressure on Amazon:
- Spread the word, and ask your
friends to join you by signing the petition to Amazon.
- Help flood Amazon.com’s offices with calls
asking for these costumes to be pulled. Their
Customer Service phone number is: 1-866-216-1072 and their
corporate headquarters phone number is:
1-206-266-1000.
- Share this effort on Facebook
and make sure your friends know you're taking a stand about this
issue. It would be great if you post the below
link to your wall with a comment.(http://www.ufwaction.org/campaign/halloween2009)
You
can also post on Amazon.com's fan page at: http://www.facebook.com/amazon#/pages/Amazoncom/9465008123?ref=ts and
tell them what you think of them selling these
costumes.
- Sign our
Twitter petition to Amazon.com, urging them to
immediately pull the costumes off their internet site as a
symbol of respect and good will towards their large immigrant
client base. To sign, just click here, and then click
the "Sign and Tweet" button. If you've never used Twitter, you
can set up a new account and sign the petition at the same time!
(NOTE: You may have to try a few times to get through if
Twitter's web servers are busy.)
To demonstrate the harm of these costumes, I want to
share a review of the mask that was on Amazon.
About time This mask is
great...I am tired of the bleeding hearts...Let’s call
them what they are Illegal and Criminals!!!...There are way to
many people who are waiting in line legally...They should all be
deported!!
Your actions now will make a huge
difference. The right wing and anti-immigration folks are
embracing these costumes. According to reports, this
morning, the hosts of Fox and Friends couldn't get
enough of the costume. Steve Doocy exclaimed, "It's a joke!
Where's your sense of humor America?" Brian Kilmeade called it
"fantastic," adding, "If you're here illegally, go to your local
police station and tell them how outraged you are because you're
an illegal alien and this costume offends you!" They ask
that you e-mail them at friends@foxnews
and and answer the question is this costume funny or is it
foul?
That's why we're going to keep turning up the heat until
Amazon does the right thing and pulls these costumes off their
internet site. A great way to keep up with the issue is
to visit our facebook fan page at http://www.facebook.com/unitedfarmworkers, where
both the UFW and are supporters are regularly posting the
latest developments.
Thanks for your help on this important matter.

P.S. If you've never signed a Twitter petition before, just click
here and click the "Sign and Tweet" button.
Signing our Twitter petition will make a huge impact
because the signatures are public. If enough of us sign, Amazon
will be forced to respond! (NOTE: You may have to try a
few times to get through if Twitter's web servers are busy.)
P.P.S If you're already on Twitter, once you've signed the
petition you can also help us spread the word about Amazon by
"tweeting" about these costumes. Make sure to use the hashtag:
#ufw #immigration
